The Hermann Oak Story

Louis Charles Hermann started tanning here in 1881 to handle the local harness trade and to supply the wagon trains of settlers traveling west along the Lewis and Clark trails.

The tannery grew, and Fred Hermann Sr. joined the company in 1907. He proceeded to supply leather for our soldiers throughout both World Wars.

Fred Hermann Jr. joined the company soon after World War II, in 1948. The country was experiencing rapid growth and development and the demand for specialized leathers increased.

Using the firm's detailed knowledge of speciality vegetable tanning, he expanded into a range of leathers each of which share the superior tooling, carving, and molding characteristics leatherworkers have come to value.

In 1985, Shep Hermann became the fourth generation to lead Hermann Oak. He was a steward of both tradition and innovation, maintaining the old-world tanning methods that made Hermann Oak a leader in quality while modernizing operations for greater efficiency and consistency. Under Shep’s leadership, the company invested in lean manufacturing systems, developed new processes to enhance leather’s strength and workability, and deepened relationships with craftsmen and manufacturers who share Hermann Oak’s commitment to excellence. He was instrumental in expanding the tannery’s global reputation and ensuring that the same values that built the business would carry it forward into the future.

Shep passed away in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship, integrity, and forward-thinking leadership. His nephew, Drew Gulick, now carries that legacy forward as the fifth generation to lead Hermann Oak Leather. Today, the tannery remains committed to producing the highest-quality vegetable-tanned leather, serving customers with honesty and expertise, and ensuring that the art of leathercraft continues for generations to come.

With an unwavering commitment to American craftsmanship and a dedication to our customers, Hermann Oak Leather stands at the intersection of history and progress—rooted in tradition, yet always evolving to meet the needs of makers who demand the best.
